Bia West District being one of the Twenty two ( 22) Metropolitan, Municipalities and  Districts in the Western region of Ghana was curved out of the then Juaboso-Bia District in 2004 by an Act of Parliament through a Legislative Instrument and  is the highest Administrative and Political authority within its sphere of influence and jurisdiction. It has Essam as its Administrative capital. The district shares borders with Bia East District to the north, to the south with Juabeso District and to the west with Republic of Ivory Coast.
